Start of Drilling Operations in Naußlitz

Project update

In the village of Naußlitz (municipality of Ralbitz-Rosenthal), work on another exploratory borehole began on May 18, 2026. The aim of the investigations is to evaluate Lusatia as a possible site for the Einstein Telescope. Three key criteria are at the center of the studies: the site should be geologically stable, hydrologically dry, and seismologically as quiet as possible.

The investigations therefore focus on the geomechanical properties of the granodiorite as well as groundwater activity underground. For this purpose, the borehole profiles are being analyzed in detail and hydrological tests are being carried out. Initial results indicate stable geological conditions and low groundwater activity.

Another major focus is the investigation of seismic background noise. As at other drilling sites, measuring instruments will also be installed at the surface and at depth in Naußlitz — expected in August 2026. Initial evaluations of data already collected at other sites within the study area in the district of Bautzen show high data quality and low seismic noise — an important prerequisite for the highly precise measurements of the Einstein Telescope.

The measurement campaigns are examining the background noise over an extended period of time, including seasonal variations and possible sources of noise such as weather conditions, agriculture, or technical infrastructure.

In addition, further drilling campaigns and geomagnetic investigations are planned for 2026 in order to map geological structures in the subsurface in greater detail.

By the end of 2026, a reliable overall assessment of the site is expected to be available. In addition to scientific suitability, this assessment will also address issues such as technical feasibility, potential construction risks, and initial cost estimates.
