Seismic Measurement Data Now Available Online
How quiet is the subsurface in Upper Lusatia? As part of the site investigations for the Einstein Telescope, continuous seismic measurements are being carried out. The latest data from the Cunnewitz monitoring station (DZA01) are now available online. Data from additional monitoring stations will be published in due course.
Measurement instruments are installed both at the surface and at depth at all drilling sites within the investigation area between Hoyerswerda, Bautzen and Kamenz. The seismometers continuously record even the smallest ground vibrations, capturing what is known as seismic background noise. This background noise is influenced by both natural factors, such as wind and weather, and human activities, including traffic, agriculture and technical infrastructure.
For the Einstein Telescope, a subsurface environment with as little seismic disturbance as possible is essential. The measurements help assess the region's seismic quietness and improve our understanding of the various factors that influence the recorded data. The long-term data collection also makes it possible to investigate daily and seasonal variations.
By making the measurement data publicly available, interested members of the public can follow the ongoing site investigations in Upper Lusatia. The published recordings are intended to illustrate the research activities; scientific conclusions will be based on the long-term analysis of the complete dataset.
